Microsoft Teams: Your message is too long. Please shorten it before sending

image

Microsoft Teams has a maximum message length, but I can’t work out the variable that set it off. At pure word count it appears to be ~2,400 words, but if you paste an IM chat from SfB with way less words all the line breaks/paragraphs seem to flag it too.#

I will see if I can find out the combination of factors that set it off.

    Hi.

Did you finf a way to change the word count limit? and is it still 2400 as you mentioned above?
    Thanks

What were you thinking when it was decided to have a word count in an area that you claim is for discussions?

We’re just transitioning over to Teams and away from email, but even the shortest of emails are too long for a comment in Teams. And as for your cheery note, “You’ll need to shorten your message to send it.” I say “No. I need to shorten the time I’m spending trying to figure out what you mean by what you say.” Don’t patronize me. Either tell me what the count is or don’t have a count at all. Better: “Your message must be less than 2,400 characters including spaces and punctuation.” Then, blast you, don’t make me copy the message to Word to get the count! Have the counter there for heavens sake.

What’s the point of teams if I can’t have a robust discussion of an issue? Why not just continue to use email where I can at least have a robust, timely (and time stamped) conversation on an issue? At this point I really don’t see the advantage of Teams.

    • Thanks for sharing your POV. I guess by “you” you mean Microsoft, I don’t actually work for Microsoft :-). I suggest you share your opinion on their forum (tom.qa/teamsform) or user voice (tom.qa/teamsuservoice)

From my personal POV, if a message is that long, it’s more of a document than a message, it might be better distributed as such. I find people rarely read long emails or messages end to end.

I get the error message sometimes for a post that is 8 words. Having a lot of issues with Teams lately. I have to log out completely and open it again to get it to let me upload an Excel file.

My usecase for to long messages is just to paste a snippet/section of a logfile or a cli output.
And at this point it gets really annoying.
    – no hint of Max length
    – Need to switch to another tool, usually email
    – My Admin has not found a documentation for the Limit, this is really sad.

I am not aware of such a Limit in Slack. At least did not touch the Limit.
Why they would not implement a routine such as give a qualified warning to the User and maybe simply split the message into 2 or 3 … messages until a next hard Limit.

I had a big file that I deleted. Now I’m stuck and cannot chat with this person. I tried rebooting. There’s nothing to “shorten” How do I get out of this no-win? keep getting the shorten message. I need to clear this out of something.

Okay, I broke the jam. I “replied” to his last comment from the ellipsis menu and that did it. so never mind.
