Hide the “Get Windows 10 Tray Icon” with PowerShell

If you have a windows 7 machine that isn’t going to be upgraded for whatever reason, the tray icon is quite annoying. It comes down as a windows update (KB3035583), you can uninstall it, but it might queue up again to be installed.

If you want to just hide it, you can set the following registry keys via PowerShell and reboot

New-Item -Path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows -Name Gwx -Verbose

New-ItemProperty -Name DisableGwx -Value 1 -Path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx -PropertyType DWORD -Verbose
