Microsoft Teams launched worldwide in March 2017, and with world events, 2020 has proven to be the biggest year yet for Microsoft Teams adoption.

Microsoft Teams usage statistics

Microsoft Teams daily active users

During the 2020 pandemic, adoption skyrocketed. There were 44 million users active by March 2020, and 75 million by April. In October 2020, Microsoft announced 115 million daily active users.

  • The number of organizations using Teams increased from 50,000 in 2017 to 500,000 in 2020. Source VentureBeat

  • According to a 2019 Q4 Technology Executive Council Survey conducted by CNBC, 58% said their firms use Microsoft Teams, 30% said their firms use Slack.

  • A study of US Teams users in 2020 found that 29.71% of companies used Microsoft Teams for remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Twice as many people turned on video in March 2020, compared to video usage before the pandemic.

  • Microsoft and Forrester’s research reported that Microsoft Teams can deliver time savings worth around $6.9 million.
  • Information workers save an average of four hours a week on Microsoft Teams thanks to improved information sharing and collaboration features. The potential savings would equate to $14.3 million.
  • Information workers save more than one hour per week on Teams because they don’t have to switch between applications due to Microsoft Teams integrations.
  • Having access to all resources required within Teams (messaging, meeting, and calling) reduces downtime in companies by 14.6%. Compared to on-premises solutions, these savings are worth around $258,000.
  • Companies report significant savings on mobile, long-distance, web conferencing, and telephony solutions when switching to Teams. The average saving over 3 years can add up to $648,727.
  • Within three years of implementing Microsoft Teams, companies report an average reduction of around 150 overnight trips, saving around $233,080.

  • Improved worker satisfaction and engagement through Microsoft Teams reduced attrition rates from 11.8% to 11.4% with an average of 20 fewer employees leaving the company.
  • IT compliance and eDiscovery costs fall by around 13.2% per day with Microsoft Teams, equalling around $43,050 in savings.
  • Microsoft Teams improved compliance for surveyed customers. Forrester learned that compliance costs reduced by 14.1%.
  • Time spent on eDiscovery activities fell by 12.3% when using Microsoft Teams.
  • The average cost to onboard new employees when using Microsoft Teams reduced by 17%.
  • Companies with more than 20,000 employees saw an 11.5% reduction in the average cost to onboard new employees.
  • Companies with fewer than 2,000 employees saw an 18.2% reduction in the average cost to onboard new employees.

Microsoft Revenue statistics

Microsoft doesn’t break out revenue for particular product lines like Microsoft Teams, but we can see Microsoft’s revenue has increased massively over the years. Here are the stats

  • In the first quarter of the 2021 fiscal year, Microsoft generated $5.71 billion of operating income from productivity and business processes.
  • In 2020, Microsoft generated $46.4 billion from the productivity and business segment, which includes Microsoft Teams.
  • When reporting its Q3 2020 earnings, Microsoft reported that in the three months ending in September 2020, it had revenues of over $37.2 billion.
