Cisco Cloud Video Interop (CVI) and Certified SBCs for Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams

image

Big news from Microsoft Ignite.

Microsoft and Cisco are formally partnering, enabling the following:

  • Cisco runs Microsoft Certified Cloud Video Interop (CVI) Service – Cisco Webex and standards SIP video room systems the ability to connect to the Microsoft Teams meetings
  • Cisco Session Border Controllers (SBC’s) will be certified for Direct Routing
  • Microsoft Teams Rooms will be able to directly connect to Cisco WebEx Meetings

I’ll have separate blogs Microsoft Teams Room joining Webex meetings.

Cisco certified Cloud Video Interop for Microsoft Teams

The Cloud Video Interop Service is targeted to GA in early CY20. It is expected to function much like the other existing cloud video interop services from Poly, Pexip and BlueJeans. I would expect Cisco to give it to their current device customers at a free or affordable rate (but have no insider knowledge of the commercial model).

This means lots of customers with Cisco Room systems now have a simple and “single vendor” way to add the ability to join Microsoft Teams meetings from their room systems.

Cisco Session Border Controllers (SBC) to be certified for Microsoft Teams Direct Routing

Another big unblock for customers heavily invested in Cisco infrastructure who want to use Microsoft Teams for telephony. They will now be able to use those Session Border Controllers to connect to Microsoft Teams to bring their own SIP trunks/user phone service connectivity for Microsoft Teams – called Direct Routing.

This is especially interesting now that “dual forking” having both a phone from anther PBX (e.g. Cisco Communications Manager) and Teams ring for the same phone number, is easier with missed call suppression.

No details yet on which SBC’s will be certified, and which versions of IOS will be required. I will update the blog as I have more. Subscribe here
