Surface Hub 2 details revealed, will Microsoft Teams get 4K Video Conferencing?

On April 17th Microsoft had an event at Steelcase in New York to share details on the Surface Hub 2. There will be a Surface Hub 2S 50” and 85” (in 2020) and later a 2X in 2020 (probably late 2020).

The 2X will be the version that does the fancy dynamic pivot you may have seen in the early promotional videos. You can upgrade a 2S to a 2X by changing a “compute cartridge” which also will push a pin in the 2S housing that enables the pivoting of the screen.

Some details from the event a great Windows Weekly coverage.

  • 2S 50” starts shipping June, starting at $8,999 (goes up to about ~$12,000 depending on the options you pick)
  • 50” greater than 4k display, 92dip, 3 by 2 aspect ratio. Local Dimming. Matt finish.
  • “Tablet class” pen and touch
  • 4k camera, 90 degree field of view
  • 8 element mic array
  • Front speakers and built in subwoofer
  • Optional battery pack to move it around and use without a power plug for about 2 hours
  • The 2S runs a specific custom edition of Windows, “Windows 10 Team” (not to be confused with Microsoft Teams”).
  • For the first time, Microsoft will support customers loading regular Windows 10 onto the device, essentially turning it into a giant standard PC

In the demo the they say “because we have a greater than 4k screen, we can see each of these 4 faces at up to 1080p”. That’s interesting, I wonder if Teams will be pushing 4 x 1080p streams?

2X processor cartridge will look something like this (thanks to The Verge)
