Skype for Business Integration will come to Yammer

Often in the Microsoft world we wonder why there are competing options to do the same thing, for example Skype for Business, Yammer Now and Send, all around the concept of quick/instant messaging.

Along with the news today that Yammer will be auto activated for all eligible O365 tenants (previously you had to go and enable/provision it). Yammer announced they were depreciating:

  • The Yammer Now mobile app will be deprecated on March 4, 2016.
  • Online Now will remove real-time messaging in favour of direct messaging in the next several months.

From the Microsoft blog post: “As Yammer integrates more deeply with Office 365, it will leverage Skype for Business for real-time capabilities”

And as Yammer integrates more deeply with Office 365 Groups, it will open up options “such as escalate your Yammer conversation into a Skype call”.

This feels like another step towards tighter integration with the Office 365 suite and Office 365 Groups. No specific date was given other than first half of 2016.
