Office 2016 Skype for Business GPO Settings

Group Policy is falling out of fashion these days, with more settings being defined in-band which is easier for Office 365 and non-domain joined machines, however Office 2016 does still have some Skype for Business GPO settings:

Once installed you will have the following GPO settings available:


  • Specify server
  • Additional server versions supported
  • Disable automatic upload of sign-in failure logs
  • Disable HTTP fallback for SIP connection
  • Require logon credentials
  • Disable server version check
  • Enable using BITS to download Address Book Service files
  • Configure SIP security mode
  • Global Address Book Download Initial Delay
  • Prevent users from running Microsoft Lync
  • Allow storage of user passwords
  • Configure SIP compression mode
  • Trusted Domain List

  • Can you please explain why there is no setting for “Disabling the Conversation Preservation State”? Was this removed or will the previous policy still configure this setting for 2013 thru 2016 users? Thanks, -Tony

    • MSFT and others are moving more to “bring your own/Azure/Intune/MDM” type management moment with Windows 8.1 and 10, not defending it, but it seems to be the strategy.

  • I’m looking to permanently disable the options to Save IM and Call logs into email Conversation History folder. Do you guys know to disable this feature?

    • This is set via Lync/Skype Client Policy:

      EnableIMAutoArchiving : False
      EnableCallLogAutoArchiving : False

      These settings gray out the client options that allow them to choose whether or not to Save these items. It does, however NOT prevent the creation of the Conversation History folder (at least not in Exchange 2010). So our users have this empty folder that they cannot remove.

  • We have noticed that when screen sharing the sharing bar that comes at the top of the screen auto hides by default on O365 however on older versions of Skype it is pinned by default and does not by default auto-hide. Is there some registry or group setting that is available to pin it by default.

    You may also be aware that ending of a SKype call when screen sharing was enabled does not stop the screen sharing by default and when the screen sharing top bar is hidden, people tend to forget sharing the screen.

  • We were told by our Forest Domain that the Skype for business 2015 is causing customers Outlook to crash since it is set to automatically start when a user logs on. So the support team tests this out using captures, etc…and thus far Outlook 2013 with eVault (Symantec Virtual Vault) does not crash or hangup if Skype is started after Outlook. Is this true or is there a setting via GPO or Registry that could be used to avoid this situation? I know we have not setup any GPO setting and Skype for Business does use the “Auto Discovery” option at the Forest Domain. Perhaps a PowerShell (PS) script that could set the best settings going forward.
